You Can’t Teach Good Habits

I suppose “good” is a loose term here. A person’s habits are considered good (or bad) depending on the situation they’re in, correct? Everyone does things a certain way or has a type of mindset based on their own experiences. These habits stick with them because they’re used to it, comfortable with it, make things easy, or go with the flow (positively or negatively). Change is hard. You’ve all heard the phrase. Changing your habits is harder, in order to fit the needs of the current situation one is in. Adaptability is such a key still to have here, since it allows the openness in oneself to go out of their comfort zone to essentially build another comfort zone for the future. It’s impossible to teach, but not out of the realm of possibility for someone to realize that habits must change. One can lay the breadcrumbs for the other, but if they don’t bite, then moot point. ...

Balance

It takes years of training for gymnasts to have great balance. It’s definitely not the balance I’m talking about. The buzz term you’ll hear in any industry is work/life balance. It’s simple. Allocating time for work and your personal life evenly. Maybe not as simple as we think. Every industry, company, role, profession, or whatever big word you want to call it, makes balance difficult. Maybe it’s the long hours. Maybe it’s about being constantly on edge about being called upon after hours when something breaks. It’s highly likely you just don’t have enough time in the work week to get anything done because you’ve scoped out 3 steps ahead that you require extra time on the weekend to get shit done due to the delicacy or complications of your work. Or rather, just lack of resourcing with no company buy-in to increase said resourcing. ...

Accountability

Take responsibility. It takes a lot of learning from within to know when to hold yourself accountable, or even to hold others accountable. We learn more from our mistakes because they hurt yourself and others. Pain is memorable. Sometimes, that’s a good feeling. It means you care enough to make sure it never happens again. I’ve experienced by observation the lack of accountability. It’s strange. One is allowing an endless cycle of inefficiency because the other isn’t aware that they’ve made a mistake. How will they learn? Simply, they won’t. Only a matter of time before it hits again. What is it? Poor mentorship or management? In that case, one must learn to hold themselves accountable. Takes years to be self-aware. There’s no true methodology to it. Just going through the motions. ...

The Nerd

“an unstylish, unattractive, or socially inept person” - Merriam-Webster The stereotype hasn’t gone away. The definitions have evolved over time. Growing up gives you perspective on how the word was used and how it’s used now. The question I seek to answer is, “Are nerds popular now”? Let’s look back for a second. Picture pants hiked up to your chest, bowtie on a baggy dress shirt, and glasses. So basically Steve Urkel from Family Matters, but look how Jaleel White turned out. Proves you are not who you play as. ...

Managing Expectations

An ability that drives success, I think. Whether you’re a person in charge of others or an individual looking to break out in your career, being able to manage expectations is a good skill to have. Is it easy to obtain? Like most things, probably not. If you’re willing to put in the work, you’ll probably pick it up through trial and error. We’re inclined to say “yes” to many of things. The question is, why do we say yes so much? Is it to impress someone? Are we just afraid to say no because of what people will think of us? Are we that confident in our power to get the ask done? These are the questions I ask in a professional setting, trying to find an answer to apply in said setting, but also outside of it. Bear with my brain here. ...
